What’s In The Name

Sláinte (Pronounced ‘Slawn – Cha’) – is a word of Irish / Scottish Gaelic origin that translates in english as “Good Health’.

It’s a way of expressing a desire for good health and happiness and acknowledging the importance of friendship, community, and of celebrating the good things in life. Additionally, it’s a wish to all at Vision that have made her and all that sail aboard in the future, for ‘Good Health’.

Naming a vessel, for us, ended up leaning into our Irish heritage, with both of us having grandparents and great grandparents that emigrated from Ireland, before settling in the U.S.

If you caught the Instagram interview of us last week by Vision Yachts, there was a question regarding the name of our vessel Sláinte.

What we neglected to share was what our daughter thought our boat should be named. Upon hearing our thoughts on cruising full time on a catamaran, Alex said “I have a name for your boat, it should be called abandonment”.

Safe to say ‘Abandonment’ is not something you want to be calling out on a VHF radio to other boaters or vessels within our area..
